We need diversity and give opportunities to models of color, because we live in multicultural world and everybody should be represented in the Media to be inspired by their success, to be able to relate to them. White Model Apologizes After Her Photo Shows Up On Blackhair Magazine

Blackhair magazine had some explaining to do after mistakenly featuring a white model rocking afro-textured hair on the cover of its latest issue. The publication, known for offering hair tips and tricks for black and mixed-race women, was called out by a white model Emily Bador who says an old modeling photo of her was used without her permission for the December/January issue of the mag.

This is a unique case when white model apologizes for cultural appropriation

I like to think of my work as inclusive to all Black hair styles/types – kinky, straight, synthetic, human, weaves, wigs, and tracks, because we as collective wear all. It’s in our beauty shops, hair salons, and bathroom cabinets. It’s a part of our history. It’s a part of contemporary culture. It’s a part of our conversations. It’s a part of our daily lives. 

I’ve been told many times “your hair is your face”, so it’s something that we must tend to, and care for. It’s something that we must treat with sensitivity when describing, but should not allow it to incite insecurities. In my eyes, it’s the single most visible and powerful feature on the black female form and I enjoy creating work about it because it is so dynamic. I make photos that display the illusory beliefs of beauty in a visually stimulating way. I want them to be a catalyst for discussion about us and our experiences. — @NakeyaBrown

Shea Moisture has, yet again, highlighted the ways in which the beauty industry marginalizes women of color.

In their second ad for their #BreakTheWalls campaign to promote the more than 150 products it has for all hair types, Shea Moisture challenges the way brands use the word “normal” to label hair products.

We are all different and we all need beauty products to fit our necessities, however beauty industry is not for everybody. Shea Moisture does products for every person, as they say “for every kind of normal” and it’s amazing. They promote natural beauty and let every woman regardless of her skin color or type of hair to complement her beauty with necessary products they make. That is a huge step to equality.
